Economy, Geography, History, and culture of Bangladesh

    Bangladesh economy

Not long ago Bangladesh was the richest country in the world. At present the country has been achieving annual GDP growth rate at above six percent for the last few years. It will become a middle-income country by the year, 2015. In its Global Economics Paper (issue number 134 published on December 1, 2005) Goldman Sachs economic researchers of the USA have placed Bangladesh among the “Next 11” countries after Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC), which have the potential to be substantial economies in the next decades. The World Bank fact sheet 2005-2006 says that Bangladesh is tenth most rapidly growing economy among 31 large developing countries. According to the Goldman Sachs, if Bangladesh remains on track in economic reforms it could become the 22nd largest economy in the world in the year 2025, less than 20 years from now. The per capita income in Bangladesh by PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) is US$ 2000 (two thousand); and by Atlas Method US$ 690 (2009). Once you visit the country, you will be surprised seeing the beautiful ever green landscape of it; the ever smiling friendly people; and how much the country differs, in reality, from your idea about it! The people of Bangladesh are one of the most liberal nations in the world.

Music and dance. The traditional Bangladeshi music shares the perspectives of that of the Indian sub-continent. The musical tradition of Bangladesh is lyrics-based, with minimal instrumental accompaniment. Bangladeshi dance forms draw mainly from folk traditions of the country, as well as from the North Indian classic dance tradition. Among the tribal dances, particularly popular are, Monipuri, and ‘Santal’.

The culinary tradition of Bangladesh has its own unique traits as well as close relations to north Indian and Middle Eastern cuisines. Rice and curry of fish, chicken and meat are traditional favorites. More than ten thousand ‘Tanduri Restaurants’ in the UK are owned by Bangladeshi people.

Dress. The ‘sharee’ is the most widely worn dress by Bangladeshi women. Among men, Western attire, shirts and trousers, is more widely adopted. At home men wear ‘Lungi’ (sarong).

Society. Reflecting the long history of the region, Bangladesh has a culture that encompasses elements both old and new. Bangladesh is a hierarchical society. People are respected because of their age and position. Older people are viewed as wise and are granted respect.
